Competence based Education - Need for the hour

ASHA MITTAL, an Educationist, IUEF State President of Punjab,
Majority of the recruiters, these days,  are not satisfied merely with the degrees or the marks or the grades of the candidates, just in sharp contrast to the academicians, they are rather looking for something beyond that ; in addition to the knowledge acquired by them, they are eager to see if the candidates are able to apply that knowledge suitably or not.
Hence, it clearly implies that the needs of workforce are changing and the employers are keeping an eye on the courses and their curriculum as designed by the academicians.
The recruiters aren't able to judge the competencies of any candidate merely by his grades, but want to know how much he has learnt and whether he has acquired the requisite skills for any particular job or not.
So, here arises the need of  skill based competencies where the time for the completion of the program may vary but the learning is going to be fixed and the student can't move on without acquiring and demonstrating the fluency in the skill.
This is quite  unlike the current pattern in most of the colleges where the duration of a course is fixed and on completion of the same, the degree is awarded without ascertaining whether the student has acquired the required skill or not.
This competence based learning is going to bridge the gap between knowledge and its application at the workplace and hence is going to reassure the employer about the desired output from his  employees.
It is going to cut down the cost, accelerate the completion of the degree and is going to meet the changing needs of the workforce.
Some of the Colleges/ Universities in some  countries  are providing the competence based education, but they are also in the developmental stage.
Slowly and gradually, every college and University across the globe, need to restructure and redesign their curricula so as to meet this new challenge.
The students also need to be very careful and selective while choosing any course, college or university for them in order to come up to the expectations of their future employers.
