Education undoubtedly plays a very significant role in the growth and development of any country by producing skilled manpower, enhancing the industrial productivity and thus improving the quality of life.
But, it is very unfortunate that in India, majority of the youth entering the workforce are unskilled and are unable to gauge the requirements of the industries they are working with. Only 4-5% of them are skilled enough to give the desired output compared to nearly 50% of their global counterparts.
Out of the nearly 8-10 lakh Engineering students that graduate every year, merely 8-10% are skilled and thus fit to take up the core engineering jobs.
The students also need to be trained in soft or communication skills, verbal as well as written and basic computer knowledge so as to enable them perform better.
Most of the educational institutions in India, Govt as well as Pvt, don't emphasise on these and fail to realise the importance of turning students into workers which later affects their efficiency at the workforce and its productivity subsequently.
Hence, India is in dire need of developing it's existing low skill levels so as to accelerate it's growth and development and also to compete globally.
At present, more than one crore youth need to be skilled and in next 10 years or so, more than 200 million youth are going to enter the workforce.
There is a huge potential in India for employability provided right steps are taken at the right time to train and skill the youth before their entry into the workforce.
